So, apparently the trailer for the new Sherlock Holmes movie (which has been haunting and teasing me for the past six months since I found out it was being made) has been released. Take a lookie for yourself here: [link]
Well... I'm not quite sure what to say. I can deal with the idea of Robert Downey Jr. playing Sherlock Holmes, since I've seen more stuff with him recently and I think he's just crazy enough to pull it off well, and Jude Law as Watson is good, considering they're going for a younger, more rebellious version of him.
I knew the plot would be different and not one of the canon short stories or novels. However, my fear is that they're going to turn the whole idea of Sherlock Holmes into... I don't know, something that it really isn't.
I mean, anyone who's read the books will already know that Holmes can literally kick most people's asses physically and mentally, has very strange quirks and habits, doesn't eat well or take care of himself, disobeys the law to fit his needs, kinda fails in the female department (more on this in a second), and is pretty much an all-around bad ass. And I love how most people don't actually know this stuff about him until they read the books. Everyone always assumes that he's a righteous, upstanding citizen who always does right and never fails to get the guy in the end. So not true.
My main concern(s) falls under the category of "Female Character" a.k.a. Irene (pronounced I-reen-ee) Adler. Now, in the books, of which she is the main focus of the first, she is referred to in Watson's commentaries as "the woman", leaving the reader to decide for his or herself if this married American (yes, she is from New Jersey) lady is the only one to have intrigued Holmes's curiousity in the love department (*spoilers* she is presumably the first person and the only woman ever to outwit him).
The fear I've gotten from the trailer is that, unlike in the books, where this supposed (and quite ambiguous) relationship they have is never discussed much and is left for the reader to decide, it will be completely taken to the "they are definitely and most certainly a couple" level. Which would kinda suck. Not in terms of the "OMG HOLMES HAS A GIRLFRIEND THAT SUCKS FOR US FANGIRLS" type of thinking (quite the opposite), but just... in terms of his general character. Remember when I said that he "kinda fails in the female department"? Well, when I say that, I mean that throughout every single story he's in, it's hinted, with the exception of Adler, that Holmes has trouble with empathy and romance. He often leaves all matters of love in Watson's hands for each case, and often condemns the women he comes across for being self-obsessed, cold, and uncaring. He is unmarried, and, again, with the exception of Adler, is never mentioned showing interest in any woman, unlike Watson. In fact, Holmes has trouble really connecting to anyone at all, except for Watson, but that's because they're confidantes and best buddies (in an odd way). For anyone who's read Watchmen, think of them in terms of Rorschach and Nite Owl (as Holmes and Watson respectively), and you'll understand.
The point is, I dearly hope that this interesting aspect of Sherlock Holmes won't be mauled to death by this movie (which, if you watch the trailer, kinda shows why I'm so damn worried).
